Frank Ocean – Nikes [Video Premiere]
Frank Ocean makes a momentous return to the music scene with the surprise premiere of his eagerly anticipated second studio album ‘Blonde’ supported by the single ‘Nikes’.
Following the release of his visual album ‘Endless’, Frank Ocean didn’t stop there with his resurgence of new music and has dropped his long-awaited follow up to 2012’s ‘Channel Orange’. Much like Kanye West and Beyoncé before him, Ocean takes the enigmatic approach of releasing his sophomore album ‘Blonde’ with minimal promotion, just hearsay, and eschewing a true lead single in favour of giving the audience the project as a whole package in one go.
The experimental 17-track LP features a vast array of uncredited superstar guest spots including Beyoncé (Pink + White), Kendrick Lamar (Skyline To) and André 3000 (Solo (Reprise)) among others with production from Frank Ocean himself, as well as Pharrell, Tyler, the Creator, Jamie xx, Rostam, Bob Ludwig, and many more.
Album opener ‘Nikes’ receives the video treatment to serve as the introduction to the project further displaying Frank Ocean’s nonconformity in the music industry. The murky, psychedelic offering, produced by Ocean himself, touches upon the subject of materialism featuring two voices intwined among the avant-garde soundscape competing to put their message across.
The video punctuates the hedonistic message with imagery of androgynous models lying on a floor of cash, male and female strippers in angel wings, immolation and Ocean decked out in glitter and heavy eye makeup. Amongst all the thought-provoking imagery, the visual also includes tributes to A$AP Yams, Pimp C, and Trayvon Martin. Watch below:
