Beyoncé – Formation (Video Premiere)
The one and only Beyoncé does what Beyoncé does best and comes out of nowhere with a surprise new single just in time for the Super Bowl aptly titled ‘Formation’.
The day before Beyoncé takes the stage for the Coldplay-headlined Super Bowl 50 halftime show, the singer dropped her surprise new single ‘Formation’, her first solo song released since 2014’s ‘7/11’ and ‘Ring Off,’ bonus cuts from the re-release of her monumental self-titled 2013 album who’s unconventional release shook the music industry and the superstar has followed the same route with her new track and its accompanying visual.
‘Formation’ was written by Beyoncé with the collaboration of Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee and follows in a similar vein to ‘7/11’ with its viral sensibilities, jarringly catchy-repetitive nature and Instagram caption-ready lyrics, “Y’all haters corny with that illuminati mess” and “You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation” to name a few. Mike WiLL Made-It helms the eccentric production which starts off sparse with its quirky synths and scatty percussion before progressing into a triumphant trap-pop bop.
Always wanted to work with Beyoncé and after working with her I respect her on even more levels than I knew she was on… Real ARTist Fr

The accompanying music video was dropped in true Beyoncé fashion, unlisted on YouTube, and was directed by Melina Matsoukas, who previously directed several videos for Beyoncé, including ‘Pretty Hurts’. The politically-charged visual was filmed in New Orleans featuring shots of the 34-year old on top of a submerging police car in a flooded street interspersed with some fierce choreography set to a mix of 19th century and 20th century aesthetics. Most notably, the clip ends on a young hooded black boy dancing in front of a line of SWAT officers before the video cuts to a graffitied wall with the words “stop shooting us” tagged on it alluding to the Black Lives Matter movement.
‘Formation’ is available to stream and download for free exclusively through Tidal and it has been confirmed that Beyoncé will be performing the surprise song on Sunday during the Super Bowl halftime show at Levi’s stadium in Santa Clara, California. Watch Beyoncé slay below:
