Ariana Grande – Focus (Single/Video Premiere)
Ariana Grande bursts back onto the music scene with her triumphant new single “Focus” and its accompanying video.
“Focus” was written with the collaboration of Ariana Grande, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Savan Kotecha and Peter Svensson with Max Martin on the beat and is one hell of a sassy pop banger!
The bombastic production is a shout back to the Rich Harrison, funk-infused pop sound of the mid-2000s with a contemporary electronic gloss over. The horn-heavy chorus draws comparisons to Grande’s previous hit “Problem” (complete with a talking male on the chorus ala Big Sean) and theres hints of Kat Graham’s “Put Your Graffiti On Me” in the rattling arrangement. Ariana’s vocals can be borderline shrill and grating but she manages to rein it in and provides a confident delivery on “Focus”.
The accompanying music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis and produced by Brandon Bonfiglio, was released simultaneously with the single. The style-heavy clip is all glitz and glam with Ariana commanding the listener to “Focus on Me” against a variety of colourful backgrounds and the choreography ain’t half bad compared to the laughable attempt in “Problem”.
Ariana Grande previously expressed the meaning of the song: “When I say ’focus on me’ I’m not asking to be the center of attention. I’m not asking you to focus on my face or my clothes or my body or my singing voice. By ’focus on me,’ I literally mean focus on me. Focus on what I’m all about and what I believe in. The more we focus on each other as people and not on what we look like, what we’re wearing, our gender, our hairstyle, our sexuality, the color of our skin. But focus on each other on a soul level. The more we realize how much we have in common, the more we listen to each other, the more one we become.”
“Moonlight” is Ariana Grande’s third studio album set for release in 2016. “Focus” serves as the first single off her upcoming project, watch the video below:
